Conquest of Space

Conquest of Space Stamp from Marshall IslandsOn May 15, 2001, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued these postage stamps honoring man's Conquest of Space. The dream of manned space flight was realized when Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space in 1961. Since then, mankind has achieved remarkable milestones in space exploration.

In 1962, John Glenn became the first U.S. astronaut to orbit the Earth and, in 1965, Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov was the first man to walk in space. Thanks to these courageous pioneers, Neil Armstrong and the astronauts on Apollo 11 became the first men to reach the Moon in 1969.

 

Conquest of Space Stamp from Marshall IslandsSpace exploration continued with the first space shuttle - Enterprise - a test vehicle that paved the way for the development of the first manned space shuttle flight. Designed by Charles Knotek, each stamp depicts a beautifully detailed image of an important milestone in space exploration.

40th Anniversary of Manned Space Flight issue from Marshall IslandsOn April 12, 2001, the Marshall Islands Postal Service celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Manned Space Flight with the issue of four new postage stamps.
 


40th Anniversary of Manned Space Flight issue from Marshall IslandsFor centuries mankind has gazed in amazement toward the heavens, pondering the vast cosmos and wondering what it would be like to ascend to the celestial realms above the Earth. On April 12, 1961, this ancient dream was realized when cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man in human history to journey into space.

40th Anniversary of Manned Space Flight issue from Marshall IslandsA few weeks later, Alan Shepard became the first American in space, and Virgil "Gus" Grissom soon followed as America's second man to enter space. Cosmonaut Gherman Titov was Russia's second man in space and the first to make multiple orbits of the Earth. The Space Age had begun.

International Space Year Stamps

Japan

Issue Date: 07/07/1992

International Space Year stamps from JapanA pair of 62 yen postage stamps (se tenant) were issued Tuesday 7 July 1992 commemorating the international Space Year. The International Space Year was established at the United Nations General Assembly in 1989 with the aim of making people more aware of space development and international co-operation including earth observation using artificial satellites. Also, 1992 marks the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the New Continent and it is the 35th anniversary of the international Earth Observation Year (the Year of launching of the first artificial satellite Sputnik IM). 

International Space Year stamps from JapanThe design of the stamps is the earth observation satellite AOEOS, which is to be launched during 1995 and is depicted on the left hand stamp, while the broadcasting satellite MBS~3 and the space station in the boundless space are on the right hand stamp to represent the dream towards space in the future.

Europe in Space

Norway

Issue Date: 16/04/1991

Europe in Space issue from NorwayNorway's contribution to the CEPT Europa series of stamps featuring "Europe in Spaces" illustrate on the 3.20 stamp the TRUMSO Satellite Station established in 1967. It is amongst other things, a receiving station for earth observation satellites in Polar Orbit. 

 

 

 

 

Europe in Space issue from NorwayThe 4.00 stamp features the Andoya Rocket Range which have been in operation since 1962. About 500 rockets and 200 balloons have been sent up from the rocket range.
