New Airmail Label

Following on the success of our 2001 quartet of designs, which attracted a lot of attention in the philatelic media and several sales to non-members, John Berry has designed this new etiquette showing the moon in grey on a powder blue field with the "Orbit-ASSS" legend in royal blue.

These are available at a special rate for members from the Editor:
UK members please send one 1st class GB stamp per sheet of 24 required, plus one (only) further 1st class stamp to cover return postage.
Overseas members please send one IRC for each sheet required.

News of Members

Articles by Orbit writers appear in the May edition of Spaceflight magazine. Chris Gainor writes about British influence in NASA, developing a theme he covered in Orbit 52 whilst Alex Zheleznyakov and colleague Andrej Koryakov write about Intercosmos politics.

Scottish Members Meet

The largest group of ASSS members to meet in one place at one time since Autumn 2001 STAMPEX assembled in Elgin on the evening of Wednesday April 24th when our Chairman Margaret Morris presented part of her Astronomy collection to an open meeting of the Moray Philatelic Society.

Pleasant To Note!

A feature about our Society will appear in the July issue of the British glossy – "The Lively Magazine for the Years Ahead". Written by Jack Pleasant it will outline our objectives and activities. Thanks to Francis Kiddle for putting Jack in touch with our Editor for the details.

Wilhelm Katalogs

The Editor heartily recommends to all keen collectors of covers for the American manned space programmes two new catalogues (A5 stapled, around 50 pages) on the Mercury launches (issued 2001) and the Gemini flights (2002) compiled by the well known Germen philatelic expert Peter K. Wilhelm, of Weltraun Philatelie.b magazine.

Each catalogue lists in chronological order every event which took place in the history of each programme which has been commemorated by some kind of cover with each cover is placed in a price range. There are copious black and white images and text appears both in German and English.

If interested do please write to Peter Wilhelm at Marschall 4, 83607 Holzkirchen, Germany. The Mercury item will cost you 10 Dollars or euros and the Gemini 13 Dollars or euros. Please send cash—not cheques or stamps. The catalogues are the first in a series, which will eventually cover every American manned programme.

News of Members

Our Chairman Margaret Morris is as busy as ever showing and preparing for showing at many venues around the country. She even made it to STAMPA in Dublin in the second week in November where she was hoping to meet some of our Ireland members.

However Derek Clarke our Dublin based website editor had a very good excuse for not being there since, being a New Zealander and a luxury coach driver he was (again) selected to be the driver of the All Blacks bus during their tour of Ireland, an experience he very much enjoyed rubbing shoulders with some of rugby’s greats!

Congratulations to Czech member Julius Cacka who is co-author with Dr. Ivan Pechanek of Clovek V kosmu (Man in Space) a philatelic account of Soviet-Russian achievement in space. Any member who can read Czech are welcome to borrow a copy from the Editor. We hope to publish translated sections from Julius text in Orbit in future issues.

French "ASSS" Formed

Congratulations to our French member and international exhibitor Jean-Louis Lafon who writes to tell us that the newly formed French equivalent – Association Astrophilatelique de France - already has over 60 members and he is their first President. He was able to attract more members by advertising at the IAF Congress at Toulouse in September.

Astronomy Issues from G.B. in 2002

The programme of issues as published in the October Philatelic Bulletin shows us that in the autumn "Astronomy" is a selected theme for a stamp and Prestige Booklet Issue from Great Britain.

Spaceflight to Publish Orbit Article

The international glossy magazine Spaceflight an organ of the British Interplanetary Society intends to reproduce the article first published in Orbit in October by Alexander Zhelezynakov on "Gagarin Was Still The First!" This is a feather in our cap as it is the first time this has happened.
